It shouts in your face – A Quote by Stephen King from the Afterword of “Full Dark, No Stars”

Full Dark, No Stars is another great book.  As the title suggests, it is bleak, but this post isn’t about the stories in the book.  It’s to provide a couple quotes from the afterword of the book.

“From the start…I felt that the best fiction was both propulsive and assaultive.  It gets in your face.  Sometimes it shouts in your face.”

“I want to provoke an emotional, even visceral, reaction in my readers.”

“…when it comes to fiction, the writer’s only responsibility is to look for the truth inside his own heart.”

These are obviously bits of much longer thoughts about writing that Stephen King provides in this afterword.  Even if you don’t purchase the book, it may be worth reading the Afterword as you peruse the bookshelves at your favorite bookstore… especially if you’re an aspiring writer or just interested in the thoughts of a master writer.
