Poem: Apathy

Poem created in response to Robert Lee Brewer’s 2011 April PAD Challenge: Day 14, 14 Apr 2011.

Apathy (slight revision)

The haughty lady down the hall
always wears shades,
cakes on make-up, and
cringes, turns away when you
begin to say hello.
The spastic child
who’s always got bruises
claims he broke his arm
skateboarding, but
you’ve never seen him outside.
You tell yourself
it’s none of your business
until you see the paramedics
roll one of them out
under a white sheet.

Apathy (original version)

The lady down the hall
always wears shades,
cakes on make-up, cringes,
turns slightly when you
begin to say hello.
The spastic child
who’s always got
bruises claims he broke
his arm skateboarding,
but you’ve never seen him
outside.
You tell yourself
it’s none of your business
until you see the paramedics
roll one of them out
under a white sheet.
