Poem: Voluntary Prisoner

Poem created in response to Robert Lee Brewer’s Wednesday Poetry Prompt #123, 16 Feb 2011.

Voluntary Prisoner

Prisoner to his own choices,
he sits in solitary confinement,
in the small eight by eight cell
decorated with pictures of his family
or comic strips cut from newspapers
and a calendar upon which
he marks time.
No windows in his cube, but
on a good day he may get out
for a brief outing in the sun
and sometimes he settles for rain.
It’s better than the artificial
Fluorescence he lives in
trading hours for dollars.
